Interviews on board the Tecla
During the Tall Ships Races 2010, the leg from Kristiansand to Hartlepool, we had a journalist on board, Jennifer Allen, who made a radio raport about all that was happening on board. The programm was to be send out on the Irish radio, Beat 102-103.

53'50.8N 002'22.8E 16:41 UTCWind increased again so last night we reeved the mainsail and took down the big jib and replaced it with the small jib. It was a lot of work for a small crew, but with a plan and all the power they could give it was a successful event. We are coursing for Terschelling still, wind is mostly south and now 4/5 bf. It really is October, it is cold and wet out here. We saw a glimpse of sun this morning and again this afternoon, but it promises to be a cloudy and cold night. Sailing home is new experience for the group. Sailing towards the end of this trip, wondering when we will arrive in Enkhuizen. That time is the only time and place that is already set, Friday midday we will be back, hopefully after a nice visit on Terschelling.
De wind nam afgelopen nacht weer toe en dus hebben wij het grootzeil gereefd en hebben wij de grote kluiver voor de kleine verwisseld. Het was een hoop werk voor een kleine bemanning, maar met een plan en de wil om er een succes van te maken werd dit het ook. We zeilen nu op Terschilling wind is nu meest zuid en kracht 4/5.Op zee is het duidelijk oktober, koud en nat. Naar huis zeilen is een nieuwe ervaring voor de groep. We zeilen naar het einde van de trip en zij vragen zich af wanneer we in Enkhuizen aan zullen komen. Niets staat vast in het zeilen, maar dat wel, vrijdag middag zijn wij weer terug in Enkhuizen, hopelijk met een mooie tussen stop op Terschelling.

We are on our way again. We arrived in Whitby on Saturday morning, around 10:00 board time (08:00 UTC). We had some rough weather sailing up from Lowestoft, wind increased to a 6/7 and the waves increased as well. Part of the crew was sick, but held up very well. The wind was not so bad though.. but is was raining like somebody was pouring buckets of water out of the sky. Around midnight the wind died out and left us with the waves.. we started the engine and did the last 40 miles on motor and sail.
Whitby was very nice. During the day everybody stretched their legs and in the evening a few of us went to the pub with a colleague of ours, Steve from the Maybe. It was really nice to see him again! The Sunday was spend with a communication style training. Again the rain was falling from the sky, so staying inside was not so bad!
Today was a very beautiful day. A nice breeze from the south east, which makes it difficult for us to sail straight back to Holland. We are about to tack, going a bit more south, hoping to find some south westerly winds..
We zijn weer onderweg. Op zaterdag morgen zijn we rond 10:00 uur boord tijd (08:00 UTC) in Whitby aan gekomen. We hadden wat zwaar weer onderweg omhoog van Lowestoft met toenemende wind tot 6/7 en opbouwende golven. Een deel van de bemanning was ziek, maar heeft zich er goed doorheen geslagen. En de wind was niet het ergste... de bakken met water die uit de hemel kwamen vallen waren veel vervelender! Rond middernacht viel de wind weg en draaide naar het westen waardoor wij de laatste 40 mijl motor zeilend hebben volbracht.
Whitby was erg leuk. De eerste dag is iedereen aan wal geweest om de benen te strekken en s avond zijn we met een groepje naar de pub gegaan. We hadden ook bezoek van een collega van ons van de Maybe, Steve, wat het een hele leuke speciale avond maakte. De zondag hebben we stil gelegen en hadden wij een trainer aan boord die de groep een communicatie stijlen training heeft gegeven. Onder tussen kwam de regen met bakken uit de hemel, de binnen zitten was helemaal niet erg.
Vandaag was een hele mooie dag. Een lekker briesje uit het zuid oosten wat het moeilijk voor ons maakt recht op Nederland af te koersen. We gaan straks overstag om een beetje meer zuid te maken, daar hopen wij dan ook de zuid wester wind te vinden..

Vertrokken uit Oude Schild met een mooie snelheid hebben wij een geweldig mooie nacht gezeild. Rond 20:00 uur boord tijd begon het weer een beetje te verslechteren. Van een mooie zonnenige namiddag ging de avond over in motregen en later in buien. De wind nam wat toe, wat ervoor zorgde dat we rond 23:00 uur het topzeil weg hebben gehaald. We liepen op dat moment nog een mooie 8 a 9 knopen en stormden zo op Lowestoft af. Onze bemanning had wat last van zeeziekte, maar sloeg zich er dapper door heen, ondanks de regen zaten we aan dek met een kopje thee of koffie om warm te blijven. Het was een uitzonderlijk donkere nacht. Geen maan en geen sterren, alleen de navigatie verlichting en de schepen om ons heen.
Voor de kust van Engeland nam de wind weer wat af en draaide naar het westen, precies waar wij heen wilden.. op 8 mijl voor Lowestoft hebben wij de zeilen laten zakken en zijn het laatste stuk op de motor naar binnen gevaren, waar wij rond 06:30 boord tijd langs de kant lagen. De groep werd rond 8 uur wakker en heeft na het ontbijt de stoute schoenen aangetrokken om Lowestoft, onze eerste Engelse haven te gaan bezoeken. Hier zijn lekkernijen gekocht, de mac donalds bezocht en fish and chips gegeten. S avonds hebben we lekker samen gegeten, is nogmaals het stadje bezocht en zijn de meesten vroeg naar bed gegaan.
Vandaag zijn wij vroeg begonnen, 05:30 wakker, 6:00 aan dek, rif gestoken in grootzeil en bezaan en rond 07:00 waren wij weer buiten de pieren van Lowestoft en hebben wij het grootzeil en de fok gehezen. We zijn imiddels voorbij Great Yarmouth, gaan zo de kluiver en de bezaan zetten als wij de hoek om gaan en zetten dan koers op Whitby, zo'n 140 mijl noordelijker.

We left Oude Schild with a beautiful and sailed into a wonderful evening. Around 20:00 hours board time the weather got less good, some drizzle that turned into showers. The wind increased and therefore we took down the topsail around 23:00 hours. We where doing 8/9 knots at that time and where on a roll towards Lowestoft! Our crew has some trouble with seasickness, but battled through it and even in the rain they where on the deck drinking a cup of tea with us. It was a very dark night, no moon, no stars, just our navigational lights and the other vessels around us.
At the English coast the wind lessened and turned against us.. At 8 miles from Lowestoft we lowered the sails and went on motor for the last bit, we where moored around 06:30 board time. The group woke up at 08:00 and after breakfast put on their walking shoes and went to explore our first English harbor. They got a taste of real England with fish and chips and some went to the mac donalds. That evening we had a beautiful meal together, some went to visit the town again and most where in bed very early!
This morning we got up early at 05:30, around 06:00 everybody was on deck, we reeved mainsail and mizzen and where outside of the peers of Lowestoft at 07:00. We set mainsail and forestaysail. By now we have passed Great Yarmouth and are about to set jib and mizzen for some more speed. Our course is set for Whitby, about 140 miles from here.

After 4 weeks of vacation the Tecla is sailing again. Port of departure
is Enhuizen, with destination Enkhuizen. We have 12 days to go where
ever we want and how ever we want. No race this time, not even against
the clock. The crew is a mixture of people from the municipal of
Enkhuizen. They have been granted this opportunity by the local
government.
On the 27th of September the wind is light and variable. This does not
seem to be a problem for our new arrivals. We set the main, jib and
staysail and leave with out use of the engine. Later the mizzn and
topsails follow. We continue this slow start and after a small detour
make for the old fishing harbor of Den Oever. Before we can enter the
harbor, we have to pass the Stevin lock that keeps the salt water of the
Wadden Zee from entering the IJsselmeer. All goes well, and satisfied we
belay the last mooring line to call it a day at 18:00.
The next day the wind is still very weak. We try the best we can but
this time she totally abandon's us. When the tide threatens to take us
out to sea, we have start the engine. Once in Oude Schild, the main port
of the island of Texel, we are surprised by the amount of ships in the
harbor. Most of them flat bottom ships who used to trade general cargo
around Holland, Scandinavia, and the UK. This makes for a nice and cosy
atmosphere.
That evening we decide that the next port of call will be Lowestoft,
England. The eb tide won't be running befor 13:00 the next day, leaving
us plenty of time to do some last shopping. All goes as planned. The
wind SE force 4 bf and with all sails set we are making good progress.

Next trip
This Friday the Tecla will be leaving her dock in Den Helder to set sail to Den Oever and onward to Enkhuizen. In Enkhuizen we will pick up a group for a special cours, ErVaar.
So we hope to most some travel blogs beginning on Monday, to keep you updated on where we are, and what we are doing.. For now, the sun is shining in Holland, nice weather to go sailing!

Tecla in Den Helder
The Tecla is now moored up in Den Helder. After a bussy SAIL2010 in Amsterdam the Tecla crew was split up for a bit. Jan and Jannette sailed the Tecla to Den Helder, Gijs went with the Wylde Swan to Bremerhaven and then with the Maybe to Whitby and I (Jet) went with Frank on the J.R. Tolkien to Bremerhaven and stayed during Sail Bremerhaven.
The Tecla will stay in Den Helder for the next two weeks. Here are some pictures send to us by Kenny when he stopped by and we where not there...
