tecla in amsterdam

The Tecla is in Amsterdam, we arrived yesterday morning and spend the day walking through the city. Tonight we have a small party for Nele and Gael, they leave tomorrow. After that the Tecla will get ready for this winter and next season. We have some nice things planned that will be posted online next week.

De Tecla is in Amsterdam. We zijn gister morgen aan gekomen en hebben de dag in de stad doorgebracht. Vanavond hebben we een klein feestje voor Nele en Gael, morgen verlaten zij het schip. En dan moet de Tecla klaar gemaakt worden voor de winter en het volgende seizoen. We hebben mooie plannen en vanaf volgende week zullen die online verschijnen.

Oostende for a short stop

The group has just left the ship in Oostende. It was a nice welcome with all the parents on the shore, after a short tour around the boat, they left the 5 of us for the last bit of the journey, back to Holland, Amsterdam! We will be leaving in about two hours and hope to be in Amsterdam tomorrow morning. And then the circle will be full and this journey will really be at an end. But not before we have enjoyed some real Belgium Friet!

De groep heeft zojuist het schip verlaten in Oostende. Het was een warm welkom met de families op de kant. Na een korte tour over het schip hebben ze ons met z'n 5en achter gelaten voor het laatste deel van deze reis. We vertrekken over ongeveer 2 uur en hopen morgen in Nederland, Amsterdam aan te komen in de ochtend. En dan is het rondje rond en is deze reis echt ten einde. Maar niet voordat we echte Belgische frieten hebben gegeten!

After a short stop in Portsmouth, we are now on our way for the last track towards Oostende, Belgium. In Portsmouth we met up with a Race friend of ours, Harry. We where moored alongside a very green light ship (although they are red when still in use) and he came to say hello. We also met up with one of the winners of the Baltic race, the couple that sails the Pegasus. We went to see their boat and got the grand tour. It is a very beautiful pilot cutter built for sail training.
In the morning we set out again, but there is no wind, so we are on motor. The weather has been very fine the last two days, so we just enjoyed the view of the English coast and the warm sunshine.

We left our anchorage under sail. With mainsail, forestaysail and jib up, we first backed, then turned and then got the speed up. The water was totally calm, but the breeze was nice, so we soon got up to 6,5 knots. In the harbor entrance we met some crew members from the Funchal 500 race last year, they where on their yacht the 'stardust' and came to say hello. As we set out for Portsmouth, they set out for Plymouth. The day has been changeful, we have had rain, wind has been between south and north west, the sun is out now and the sunset promises to be very beautiful! Compared to the Atlantic Ocean, the water is so busy with traffic! Now we get the chance to explain the lights to Nele, Gael and the group, where we only met a few vessels on our big journey..

We zijn onder zeil van onze ankerplaats vertrokken. Met grootzeil, fok en kluiver omhoog, eerst gingen we achteruit, daarna draaiden we en daarna kregen we wat snelheid. Het water was vlak en de wind was perfect dus binnen de kortste keer gingen we 6,5 knopen. In de haven ingang kwamen we wat crew leden tegen van de Funchal 500 race vorig jaar, zij waren op hun jacht de 'stardust' en kwamen even hallo zeggen. Wij zetten zeil naar Portsmouth en zij naar Plymouth. De dag is veranderlijk. We hebben al regen gehad, de wind is al tussen zuid en noord west geweest, nu schijnt de zon en belooft de zonsondergang erg mooi te worden. Vergeleken met de Atlantische Oceaan is het Kanaal heel erg druk bevaren! Geeft ons wel de kans om Nele, Gael en de groep nog eens leuk uitleg te geven over lichten van schepen, terwijl we op onze grote reis bijna niemand tegen zijn gekomen!

This morning we got into Falmouth harbor. During the day the wind had picked up a little and there where gale warnings issued for our region, imminent. We where in before the gale could get to us and in this perfectly sheltered harbor, we did not feel a thing. We heard that our Bermudan friends are in for some serious heavy weather, we are all thinking off you guys, good luck this weekend!!
The group went a shore today to visit the town, see a castle and maybe buy some souvenirs. We went out to find a new part for the dingy motor which was not working.. but we had no luck. So as a nice evening exercise the group now had to paddle the dingy to shore! See how they get back tonight!

Vanmorgen zijn wij Falmouth binnen gelopen. Door de dag heen was de wind wat toegenomen en kregen wij waarschuwingen voor strom kracht 8. Wij lagen voor anker voor het echte rotweer los kon barsten en in Falmouth merk je niets van wat er buiten de haven gebeurd, wij hebben niets van de storm gemerkt! We hebben wel vernomen dat onze vrienden op Bermuda behoorlijk slecht weer over gaan krijgen de komende dagen, we denken aan hen, succes dit weekend!
De groep is vandaag aan land geweest om het stadje te bekijken, een kasteel en misschien wat souveniers. Wij hebben vandaag gezocht naar een onderdeel voor het buitenboordmotortje van de dingy, maar helaas. Dus moest de groep vanavond naar de kant roeien. Goede avond oefening! Kijken hoe ze weer terug komen!

The night at anchor was nice and the day started of with sunshine and a nice breeze. The last few hours it has been grey, drizzle has been coming down and for some time the wind was strong and still from the south. Now we are back doing 5 knots heading for England again after we have almost touched Ireland. Spirits are kept up by singing songs, I did not know there where so many Dutch spoken songs! And they seem to know them all! Right now we miss our topsail and all the tweaking we could do with it!

De nacht ten anker was fijn en de dag begon met zonneschijn en een mooi lopend windje. De laatste paar uur zijn echter grijs en met motregen, de wind was even toegenomen, maar is nu weer terug naar kracht 4 en nog steeds uit het zuiden. We lopen nu 5 knopen richting Engeland nadat we bijna Ierland aan hadden geraakt. De groep zingt liedjes om de tijd door te komen, ik wist niet dat er zoveel Nederlandstalige liedjes waren en zij kennen ze allemaal! Op dit moment missen we ons topzeil wel, en al het trimmen dat we ermee konden doen!

Bay of Fishguard

Last night our main topsail boom broke.. It survived the big ocean and a race of four months, but had a little trouble with the Irish sea.. It was a bit of a struggle to get her down, but it got our trainees to forget about being sick! During the day the wind turned more to the south and we got some warnings that stronger winds where coming in the evening. So we decided to go at anchor in a bay sheltered from the Southerlies, called Fishguard. Now at anchor, all is calm. The sun set beautifully behind the coastline of Wales and ended a very nice sunny day!

Vannacht is het boompje van het grote topzeil gebroken.. Het heeft de grote oceaan overleefd en vier maanden van race, maar had wat problemen met de Ierse zee.. Het was een beetje een gevecht om het zeil aan boord te krijgen, maar onze trainees waren hun zeeziekte even vergeten. Gedurende de dag is de wind wat meer naar het zuiden gedraaid en waren er waarschuwingen dat de wind toe zou nemen. Dus besloten we voor anker te gaan in een baai, beschermd van Zuidelijke winden, genaamd Fishguard. Nu ten anker is alles rustig. De zon is super mooi achter de bergen van Wales onder gegaan en sloot zo een mooie zonnige dag af.

The race is over. It feels strange to leave everybody behind and sail away from our little village of boats and our circle of friends. We went through a lot together and made real friends, I'll miss them and would like to see them again somewhere on the water! Our new group has a sea to conquer this first day, the Irish sea, not one of the most friendly ones.. And so most of them are sick and a little bit cold. The wind is south west, turning south, and that is just where we want to go.. The sea is not high, but the waves are very short and stop us dead in the water every now and then. Not a problem for Gael and Nele who are now part of the crew of the Tecla. They have seen a lot already, Atlantic Ocean, done and dusted.

belfast

Belfast city has been very welcoming. Yesterday we had a sunshine and some clouds, today is a bit rainy. Clair had her birthday on board yesterday, with cake and bubbles in her wine. Today we are walking in the crew parade and then on to the price giving and crew party. The group has made bandana's for the crew parade and we are getting a lot of balloons to make it as colourful as we can!
Belfast stad heeft ons geweldig verwelkomd. Gisteren hadden we wat zon en wat bewolking, vandaag regent het helaas. Clair heeft gisteren haar verjaardag aan boord gevierd, met cake en bubbeltjes wijn. Vandaag lopen we in de crew parade, gaan dan door naar de prijsuitreiking en de crew parade. De groep heeft bandana's en ballonnen gemaakt zodat we er zo kleurig mogelijk uit zien!

We are on our way to Belfast right now. We have spend two days in Ballycastle and hope to arrive in Belfast this afternoon. Ballycastle was a lot of fun. We had a very nice welcome, even a reception with the major! We were moored up with the Belle Poule and the Etoile, the Jolie Brise was in the yacht harbor and the Europa was out at anchor in the bay. It was good to see them there. The group went out to see the town, some went to the Bushmill brewery and came back with a beautiful bottle of whiskey. Others went to a swimming pool or for a long walk along the beautiful beaches. The weather has been very Irish, drizzle and some fog, but that does not make our view less attractive. We are sailing very near to the coast and the landscapes are amazing! Stone grey cliffs with green hills, some farms and hidden houses or ruins. And on the other side (the waterside) we have the Oosterschelde, which is a very beautiful view as well!

We zijn onderweg naar Belfast. We hebben twee dagen in Ballycastle gelegen en hopen deze middag in Belfast aan te komen. Ballycastle was heel erg leuk. We kregen een zeer warm welkom, en meteen een receptie met de burgemeester van het stadje. We lagen aan de kade met de Belle Poule en de Etoile, de Jolie Brise lag in de jachthaven en de Europa lag ten anker in de baai. Het was leuk om hen daar allemaal te zien! De groep is naar het stadje geweest, ze zijn naar de Bushmill brouwerij geweest en hebben een hele mooie fles whiskey mee genomen. Anderen zijn naar het zwembad geweest of hebben een lange wandeling gemaakt langs de mooie stranden. Het weer is heel Iers geweest, mizzer regen en mist, maar dat maakt het hier niet minder mooi! We varen nu vlak onder de kust en het landschap is geweldig om naar te kijken. Grote rotspartijen en groene heuvels met boerderijen of huisjes. En aan onze andere kant (de water kant) hebben we de Oosterschelde als uitzicht, ook heel erg mooi!

Race finished!!

The race is finished! All ships are over the finish line. And just now we heard that we are 1 in our class AND over all!! We got a phone call from Holland congratulating us! The last day and a half we have been at anchor and later along a quay in Sheep Haven, near a town called Downings. Gijs and I went to get some groceries, but had to hitchhike to the next town to get the supplies we needed. I stayed behind with the dog and Gijs and Clair asked somebody for a lift. This was easily arranged! We got our stuff and they even drove us back! It was a lovely day, some of the group hiked up a mountain and the rest strolled along the beautiful beach. At night we got some visitors, relatives of Clair, and had a nice party first on board and later in the local pub! Now we are under full sail again and on our way to Ballycastle. Hope the light winds will take us there.

De Race is nu echt ten einde! Alle schepen zijn over de finish line. En net hebben we gehoord dat we 1 in onze klasse zijn en 1 over all!! We kregen een telefoontje uit Nederland om ons te feliciteren! De afgelopen anderhalve dag hebben we voor anker gelegen en later tegen een kade in een baai genaamd Sheep haven, in de buurt van een dorpje dat Downings heet. Gijs en ik gingen gister boodschappen doen, maar moesten naar het volgende dorp liften om de dingen te krijgen die we zochten. Ik bleef achter met de hond terwijl Gijs en Clair een lift vroegen aan de dichtst bijzijnde persoon, en dat was meteen geregeld. Ze bleven zelfs op hen wachten om de spullen en hun, weer terug te brengen. Het was een hele mooie dag! Een aantal van de groep zijn een berg op gewandeld en de rest heeft langs een heel mooi strand gewandeld. In de avond hadden we wat bezoekers, familie van Clair, en hadden we een leuk feestje aan boord en daarna in de lokale kroeg. Nu zijn we onder weg onder vol zeil en gaan we naar Ballycastle, als de lichte winden ons daar heen willen brengen.

Land ho! And 40 miles to go! Our Irish crew jumped up and down on the foredeck as we saw the first strip of land. The midday pancakes where flying through the air and all seasickness, rain and the howling wind from a few days ago where forgotten. Now the Irish music is playing on the radio (I think other cd's are not allowed anymore..) and outside (when it doesn't rain or drizzle) Irish songs can be heard guided by someone on the guitar. We are not sure yet as to what we will do after the finish, but ham sandwiches and beers are waiting for us in one of the bays near Tory Island, where the finish is. Sarah is trying to get us all t shirts after own design with the Tecla and the race on it, as soon as we have pictures, we will post/send them! Ireland here we come!

Land in zicht! En nog 40 mijl tot de finish! Onze Ierse crew deed een dansje op het voordek toen wij het eerste stripje land zagen. De middagpannenkoeken vlogen door de lucht en alle zeeziekte, regen en harde wind van een paar dagen geleden is vergeten. Beneden wordt alleen nog maar Ierse muziek gedraaid, ik denk dat andere cd's verboden zijn en buiten (wanneer het niet regent of miezert) zitten mensen te zingen, begeleid op een gitaar. We weten nog niet zeker wat we gaan doen na de finish, maar ergens in een baai dicht bij de finish (Tory Island) staan ham sandwiches en bier op ons te wachten! Sarah doet haar best om t shirts voor de hele crew te laten drukken met de race en de Tecla erop, zodra we ze hebben sturen we foto's! Ierland, we komen er aan!

SUN!! And cleaning day! Due to the waves we had to skip a few cleaning days, but now with all the hatches open we could throw all the dirty, wet stuff out and clean the boat, bottom to top! A cd filled with love songs was playing loudly, the hallway was filled with singing Irish girls with mops, bin bags, cleaning products and the vacuum cleaner as microphone! We are still sailing down wind, now with the forestay sail on the windward side, rocking a little to much by the waves that are left off the last few days. That did not stop the yoga class from taking place though! And it certainly does not stop the dolphins from coming alongside and giving a show almost 4 times per day!

ZON!! En schoonmaakdag! Door de golven en wind hebben we een aantal schoonmaakdagen over moeten slaan, maar nu met alle luiken open en alle natte, vieze spullen naar buiten, kon het schip eens lekker schoon gemaakt worden, van onder tot boven! Uit de cd speler knalde luidkeels liefdesliedjes en op de gang stond een groep Ierse meiden mee te zingen met dwijl, vuilniszakjes, schoonmaakmiddelen en de stofzuiger als microfoon. We zeilen nog steeds voor de wind, nu met de fok te loeverd, en golven die ons iets meer dan lief heen en weer schudden. Maar dat kon de yoga les van vandaag niet tegen houden! En al helemaal de dolfijnen niet die ons nu dagelijks bijna 4 shows geven!

Winds have decreased and with them the waves. So we set the mainsail with two reefs in it this morning and took the reefs out this afternoon and changed the small jib, for the big jib. The weather is still cold, grey, drizzling, but the spirits on board are good. Singing during the day watch and discussions during the night. As we set the big jib today, we where accompanied by some dolphins playing in the waves. They had some small ones with them that jumped out of the water with every breaking wave and sometimes seemed to look at us smiling. When the dishes are done we might set the topsail to keep up the speed if the wind decreases even more.

De wind is afgenomen en daarmee ook de golven. Dus hebben we deze morgen het grootzeil met twee reven erin gezet en in de middag hebben we de reven er uit gehaald en de kleine kluiver voor de grote kluiver verwisseld. Het weer is nog steeds koud, grijs en miezerig, maar de stemming aan boord is goed. Er wordt gezongen overdag en discussies snachts. Tijdens het zetten van de grote kluiver werden we vergezeld door dolfijnen. Er waren een paar kleintjes bij die bij iedere brekende golf uit het water sprongen en soms wel naar ons leken te lachen. En vanavond, nadat de afwas gedaan is gaat het topzeil misschien wel omhoog.

The wind keeps on howling and the waves keep on dashing over the deck. Tecla now being lifted from behind by a wave, catching her breath on the top and dancing down the back like an old lady, gets to the bottom only to be swooped up again and rolled around. We are keeping up a good speed and although we roll a lot, live on board is not all that bad. Downstairs it is nice and warm, people read their book or do a card game, while the table sometimes does her own dance and lifts of the floor in a wave. During the day watch we discussed what kind of weather system is now of influence on us and what we can expect for the next day or so. While we where clinging on to our seats, we decided that it would be nice if we had some calmer weather when we get to the Irish coast.

De wind en de golven schuimen over het dek. De Tecla wordt opgepakt door een golf, kan even ademhalen op de top en dans dan de rug van de golf weer af als een oude dame om dan in het dal we opgepikt te worden en rond te rollen. We hebben er aardig de sokken in, en ook al rollen we soms wat veel met deze golven, het leven aan boord is best aangenaam. Beneden zitten mensen in de warmte lekker een boek te lezen of een spelletje kaarten te spelen terwijl de tafel onder hen soms tot leven lijkt te komen met een grote golf. Tijdens de dagwacht hebben we het gehad over het weer systeem dat ons nu voort drijft en wat de verwachtingen zijn voor de komende dagen. Gezamenlijk kwamen we tot de conclusie dat het ieder geval wel fijn zou zijn als we met wat kalmer weer in Ierland aan zouden komen.

We really are going towards Ireland and the weather wanted to be the first to tell us! Yesterday the barometer started dropping like in a free fall and within a few hours the winds increased up to 7/8bf. We had already reeved the mizzen and as we put in the reef of the main, we decided not to set it at all. Today nothing much changed. Winds are strong and waves have build up. The Tecla danced up and down the waves. During our day watch we read each other fairy tails from Ireland and ghost stories from Scotland. Although out at sea the thought of a haunted house is not as scary as when at land.

We zijn nu echt onderweg naar Ierland en het weer was de eerste die ons dat duidelijk wilde maken! Gisteren begon de barrometer op eens te vallen als in een vrije val en binnen een aantal uren was de wind toegenomen tot 7/8bf. We hadden de bezaan tegen die tijd al gereefd en tijdens het reven van het grootzeil besloten we het grootzeil helemaal niet meer te zetten. Vandaag is er niet veel veranderd. Harde wind en opbouwende golven. De Tecla danst de golven op en weer af. Tijdens de dagwacht hebben we elkaar Ierse sprookjes en Schotse spookverhalen voorgelezen. Op zee zijn spookhuizen echter minder eng als wanneer je op land bent.

12,4! 12,4 knots!!! Surfing down the waves, James hanging on to the wheel and the whole watch clinging on to their seats when we hit the 12,4 knots last night. Crazy weather and enough wind to take the topsails down and still do a comfortable 9 to 10 knots and not throw people out of their bunks! Someone said 'this is what I expected with an Atlantic crossing, waves all around and strong winds'. Well the waves have decreased and the wind is down to 4 to 5 beaufort and this still feels like an atlantic crossing. We passed the halfway mark and are now making nice progress towards Ireland, still a little over 1000 miles to go. After an eventful night the ship was totally silent during the day. As we have everybody on standby for taking down the topsails and reeving, so they get their sleep while they can, now for the first time this trip, there was nobody out on deck but the watch that was on. That did not stop us from getting into all sorts of discussions and eating a whole lot of gummy bears!

12,4! 12,4 knopen!!! Surfend vanaf een golf, met James die aan het roer hangt en de hele wacht die zich aan de bank vastgrijpt terwijl wij vannacht een snelheid van 12,4 knopen halen! Wat een weer, genoeg wind om de topzeilen naar beneden te halen en nog steeds 9 tot 10 knopen te lopen en daarmee geen mensen uit hun bed te slingeren. Iemand zei 'dit is wat ik verwacht had van een Atlantische oversteek, overal golven en veel wind'. De wind is er inmiddels een beetje uit en de golven zijn wat minder, maar het voelt nog steeds wel als of we de oceaan aan het oversteken zijn. We zijn nu over de helft maar hebben nog steeds meer dan 1000 mijl te gaan tot de finish. Vandaag was het schip overdag helemaal stil. Vanwege de wind hebben we iedereen op standby staan voor als de zeilen naar beneden moeten of we moeten reven, dus iedereen pakt de slaap die ze pakken kunnen. Voor het eerst was er niemand anders op dek, dan de wacht op wacht. Dat stopte ons niet om over van alles te discusieren en ondertussen een zak winegums weg te werken!

Last night was a windless but certainly not boring night! The waves kept rocking us as we talked about what used to scare us and what still does, about banshee's in Ireland and de kinderverslinder in Holland, we talked about the shifting solar systems and stars, (why learn them if they are going to be different in 1000 years..?) and kids names (after 20 minutes somebody asked whether this was something someone thought about in advance..). During the day we saw a lot of dolphins! They where common dolphins, but there was nothing common about their playful swimming and jumping around! They stayed for some time and gave everybody a good chance for pictures. And today was also cleaning day, the ship smells nice and clean again. And as the weather is very good, all the doors and hatches are open to let the fresh air in.

A small flu is on board and it has already made a lot of victims, me included. It comes suddenly and passes quick, but the last two days I was not up for writing the blog, hopefully the flu ended with me, no new victims so far..

Afgelopen nacht was een windloze maar zeker niet saaie nacht. De golven rolden onder ons langs terwijl we praten over wat ons vroeger en misschien nu nog wel bang heeft gemaakt, over banshee's in Ierland en de kinderverslinder in Nederland, we praten over het verschuiven van de sterrenbeelden (waarom zou je ze uit je hoofd leren als ze over 1000 jaar ergens anders staan) en kindernamen (na 20 minuten vroeg iemand uiteindelijk of dit iets was waar van te voren over nagedacht werd...). En overdag waren er dolfijnen, heel veel dolfijnen. Ze speelden voor de boeg, sprongen speels uit het water en speelden met de boeg golf. En vandaag was het schoonmaak dag, dus het schip ruikt weer heerlijk fris en met het mooie weer kunnen alle deuren en luiken open en de frisse lucht naar binnen.

Er is een kleine griep aan boord met al een aantal slachtoffers, mij inclusief. Het komt opeens op en gaat snel weer voorbij, maar ik was de laatste twee avonden niet in staat het blog te schrijven. Hopenlijk eindigd de griep bij mij, tot nu toe zijn er geen nieuwe slachtoffers..
